Frequently asked questions

Plain answers to the questions most families ask us. If something is missing, please ring — we are happy to talk it through.

In the first hours

Someone has just died at home — what should I do?+

If the death was expected, call your GP or the surgery’s out-of-hours line. They will issue the medical certificate. Once that is done, call us at any hour and we will take it from there.

What if it happened in hospital?+

The hospital will contact you about the certificate. Once you let us know which hospital, we will liaise directly and arrange to bring your loved one into our care.

How quickly do you respond?+

A real person answers every call, day or night. We can usually visit you within 24 hours, sooner if needed.

Planning the service

How much time do we have to plan?+

Most services take place 10 to 14 days after the death. There is no rush — we will hold whatever space you need to get this right.

Can the service reflect a particular faith or none at all?+

Absolutely. We work with ministers, celebrants and families of every tradition. We also welcome non-religious humanist and personal services.

Can I see my loved one before the funeral?+

Yes. You are welcome to visit our chapel of rest at a time that works for you. We will gently prepare you for what to expect.

Costs and payment

How do you keep prices clear?+

Every quote breaks our fees and disbursements into separate lines, so you can see exactly what each pound is for.

What if we cannot afford the funeral?+

There are several routes — government Funeral Expenses Payment, charitable grants, and instalment plans we can arrange. We will walk you through quietly.

Can the estate pay later?+

Yes. Banks will usually release funds from the deceased's account to pay funeral costs even before probate completes. We can help you with the paperwork.
